Thai Herbal Compress

Luk Pra Kob

Made with love and tradition.

Thai Herbal Compress, traditionally known as Luk Pra Kob, is a centuries-old Thai healing practice in which aromatic herbs and spices are bundled into cloth, steamed and applied to the body using gentle pressing, rolling and circular movements.

Each of my herbal compresses is handcrafted in Chiang Mai, Thailand, bringing together traditional Thai herbs, therapeutic heat and the rhythmic touch of Thai bodywork.

The compresses are steamed until warm, allowing the heat, moisture and aromatic qualities of the herbs to become part of the treatment. Herbal compresses have long been used alongside Thai massage and are also enjoyed as a standalone traditional therapy.

A Traditional Healing Practice

Thai Herbal Compress therapy has been used alongside massage in Thailand for generations, influenced by both Ayurvedic and Traditional Chinese Medicine practices. The compresses are steamed and then rhythmically applied to the body, allowing warmth, moisture, and herbal properties to penetrate deeply into the tissues.

The combination of therapeutic heat and aromatic herbs can help:

  • Relax tense muscles

  • Ease aches and discomfort

  • Encourage healthy circulation

  • Support lymphatic flow

  • Promote deep relaxation and overall well-being

  • Complement energy line work used in traditional Thai healing arts

The gentle heat can be especially soothing during and after deeper bodywork, encouraging the muscles to soften while creating a deeply relaxing sensation. Many clients also find the distinct, earthy aroma to be deeply calming and restorative.

What to Expect

The compress is applied once it has reached a comfortable therapeutic temperature. It may be pressed, rolled or gently held against different areas of the body.

Depending on the treatment and your comfort level, the compress may be applied directly to the skin or over clothing. When incorporated into a massage session, herbal compresses may be combined with Thai massage, Tok Sen, rhythmic compression, stretching, Thai herbal balm, hot towels, aromatherapy and other complementary techniques as appropriate.

For a full body treatment, I recommend using two compresses. This allows them to be alternated through the steamer, so one remains warm and ready while the other is being applied. Depending on the flow of the session, both may be used in together- sometimes one is placed over the chest or abdomen or under the neck as a warm, grounding element while the other is applied elsewhere. Both may be applied simultaneously to create a deeper sense of warmth and relaxation.

The Herbs

There is no single universal herbal compress recipe. Traditional blends vary throughout Thailand and each herb contributes its own aroma and therapeutic qualities.

My compresses contain:

Turmeric - Kamin / ขมิ้น

Natural anti-inflammatory and antiseptic. Calms skin irritations, brightens the complexion, and provides deep tissue soothing.

Ginger - Khing / ขิง

Stimulates localized circulation, eases muscular tension, and provides a warming sensation to comfort tired or overworked joints.

Plai - Phlai / ไพล

Powerful anti-inflammatory. Soothes overexerted muscles, helps fade bruises, promotes blood flow, and relieves chronic joint stiffness.

Lemongrass - Ta-khrai / ตะไคร้

Balancing and deeply relaxing to the body. Possesses natural antibacterial properties while nourishing and refreshing the skin.

Kaffir Lime - Ma-krut / มะกรูด

Antibacterial, antifungal, and rich in Vitamin C. Functions as a natural skin-brightening astringent while its uplifting aroma improves mood.

Tamarind leaves - Ma-kham / มะขาม

Rich in antioxidants, essential vitamins, and minerals. Naturally clarifies the skin, softens rough textures, and helps reduce surface inflammation.

Pandan - Bai Toey / ใบเตย

Provides comforting pain relief for joint and muscle discomfort while its soothing aroma helps ease tension headaches.

Croton Joufra Roxb - Plao Yai / เปล้าใหญ่

A powerful topical anti-inflammatory and deep muscle relaxant that aggressively targets localized pain and boosts circulation.

Camphor - Garaboon / การบูร

Stimulates the senses, targets deep aches, and improves circulation. Its refreshing, cooling vapors clear breathing and relieve stress.

Sea salt - Glaeu Samut / เกลือสมุทร

Acts as a thermal catalyst to hold heat in the compress and increase transdermal absorption of the herbs. Alleviates swelling to restore joint mobility.

Enhance Your Massage

Thai Herbal Compresses - $25

Thai herbal compresses can be added to any massage session or purchased separately.

For targeted care, a single compress can be used on specific areas of the body.

For a more complete full-body experience, I recommend a pair of compresses, allowing for continuous warth throughout the treatment.

Take the Experience Home

Your herbal compresses are yours to keep.

When properly cared for, a compress can typically be reused a handful of times after your initial treatment.

Many clients enjoy continuing the experience at home by reheating their compresses for future use.

If you receive herbal compress treatments regularly, you may choose to store yours in the studio freezer between sessions at no additional charge until they reach the end of their usable life.

You may also take it home and store in your own freezer.

A Note About Clothing

The natural botanicals in Thai herbal compresses can cause permanent staining. If you are receiving Thai massage with the compresses, please wear dark colored clothing, cotton material is preferable.

I am honored to share in this beautiful, healing lineage as part of your wellness journey.

Testimonials

"I rarely write reviews, so when I do, it's because I truly believe someone has made a meaningful difference in my life. For more than three years, I've been seeing Sarah for traditional Thai massage and I can honestly say she has become one of the most valuable members of my personal wellness team. Recently, Sarah traveled to Thailand to continue her training and study with experienced instructors. I didn't think she could get any better, but somehow she did."

"Such an amazing treatment! I've been seeing Sarah for a couple of years, and in that time I've transitioned to the Thai massage and I love it. I work out regularly, but I'm terrible at stretching. The Thai massage is like an assisted stretch but enhanced. It allows Sarah to target tight muscles and help loosen me up. She utilizes a wooden mallet to tap along certain areas, wide bands of fabric to manipulate body parts and beautiful steamed herbal poultice packs. It's soothing and therapeutic, but feels active even though I am but a noodle in Sarah's skilled hands."

"It is difficult to put into words the interaction that Sarah can have with your body. She is a skilled body worker with the cognition and intuition skills that you'd find in a world class spa. We are so lucky to have someone as well educated AND gifted in working with your body. I've had a number of her services over the past couple of years and her methods and techniques are very powerful in communicating with your body to help ease tension and stress in places that you don't even realize you are carrying it. Sarah is calm, nervous system aware, trauma informed and VERY comforting throughout the entire treatment."

"Great first session! Sarah was most generous and skilled. Never had Northern Thai style, only southern, and enjoyed the slower pace. Also like the way the 'hammer & chisel' penetrated into my bones with a light stimulating vibration. I'll be back for sure! Thanks Sarah!"

"I look forward to those moments where I can schedule a 90 minute massage with Sarah. It's not just that the massage revitalizes my body to take on another day nor the healing it does for my brain and mental health, but seeing Sarah's smile when I come in the door, the private changing room and bathroom where I can get ready for my session, the beautiful space where the massage takes place, the music she plays, the comfortable bed and the heat pads (oh the heat pads!) and...well the whole process. It starts with a kind, genuine smile from Sarah and ends with me floating out the door feeling heavenly. I mean it."
